Getting Insured: A Guide to Californian Home Insurance
Who Is Insured: New House Obtaining Insurance 40%
Should 2024 prove to be the year you can finally purchase a new house, obtaining home insurance may prove to be the next—and possibly even bigger—challenge.
Or maybe your insurance company dropped you even though you are a current homeowner.
That’s what happened to Marina Del Rey resident Alison Rosenberg.
“To discover that you can’t get it insured is kind of crazy, considering that your home is probably the most important purchase of your entire life,” the woman remarked.
Rosenberg explains that she recently lost her coverage from her long-term insurance company late last year, leaving her at a crossroads in her insurance journey.
They sent me an email saying that, as a result of my earlier claims, three claims
When my policy expired in January, Rosenberg informed me that they would not renew it and that they could no longer insure me after ten years.
She claims she soon reached her breaking point and began corresponding with other insurance providers. regional

Thus, 40% of customers currently have only Fair Plan. All they have is that, which is fire. The lavatory overflows. Apologies. Karl Susman, an insurance agent with decades of experience in the field, said, “Someone breaks in, any of that, washer hose comes off, nothing.”
First tip: Look for a job early.
“The Fair Plan is really drowning in applications and it’s taking like sometimes a week or two weeks just to get the policy bound,” Bach said, explaining why so many people are being forced to turn to it.
Tip 2: Reduce non-essential coverage and know what you can afford.
“We’re advising people to lower their contents coverage—that is, the amount of insurance they have on their belongings—rather than keeping their house fully covered. Instead, you could raise your deductible or reduce the amount of coverage you have on your personal property,” Bach continued.
Tip 3: Speak with a knowledgeable insurance broker who can assist with options.
Therefore, as a customer, you have the option of buying the Fair Plan straight from Fair Plan or via a broker. Brokers are not allowed to charge fees for something that is the same cost, according to Susman. “Check with brokers; make direct inquiries. How many different carriers are available to you? What capacity are you being offered by the carriers you are writing to? Have you got any? Because some brokers simply don’t have capacity with certain carriers, while others do.”
Regarding Rosenberg, she continues to consider all of her options prior to the expiration of her current insurance at the end of the current month.
Rosenberg responded, “At this point, I’ll take what I can get.”
Susman says new rules recently implemented by the California Department of Insurance and Governor Gavin Newson should encourage insurance companies to write more policies, but he acknowledges that this will take time.
Hold onto your insurance policy for the time being. Susman suggests making sure your payments are made on time and not letting them expire.
Bach advises against filing minor claims as well, noting that they may affect your risk assessment, insurance choices, and premiums.
