Harris Claims: Trump 1st Threaten Health Insurance
Madison, Wisconsin – Former President Donald Trump is the one who, according to Vice President Kamala Harris, would “threaten” the health insurance of Americans.
Harris ran on a platform of outlawing commercial health plans in 2019.
At a speech in deeply blue Dane County, the Democratic presidential contender informed Wisconsin residents that “[Trump] intends to end the Affordable Care Act.”
Harris went on, referring to the Republican candidate’s admission during the September 10 debate that he has the “concepts of a plan” to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, but isn’t yet prepared to unveil it.
“He’s basically saying he would threaten the health insurance of 45 million people in our country based on a concept,” Harris said.
Harris, 59, has shifted her campaign from supporting a “Medicare for all” single-payer healthcare system to “expanding and strengthening the Affordable Care Act” after taking President Biden’s place atop the Democratic ticket.
When asked at an Iowa town hall how her policy stance on healthcare would affect people who are happy with their private health insurance plans, Harris responded, “The idea is that everyone gets access to medical care, and you don’t have to go through the process of going through an insurance company,” during her 2019 presidential campaign.
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 164.7 million Americans had employer-sponsored health insurance in 2023; these plans would have been eliminated under Harris’s 2019 “Medicare for all” proposal.
At the boisterous gathering, the Harris campaign crammed over 10,000 supporters into the Alliant Energy Center, which is located just outside of Madison’s downtown.
The region is renowned for having high voter turnout, and in the 2020 election, it overwhelmingly favored Biden (75.5%) against Trump (22.9%).
The Post was informed by Heidi Rosenberg, a 61-year-old Madison college instructor, that Harris is still “in her heart” in favor of universal free healthcare.
She stated, “To be honest, I believe that many politicians—and she is not the first—would say healthcare free for all.
However, it’s not a realistic objective.
Rosenberg contended that adhering to the Affordable Care Act is the most sensible course of action.
“If you asked her [about universal healthcare], I think in her heart she would say yes, but it’s not realistic right now,” she continued. “I think we need to think about both.
Retired engineer Mike Revell and retired teacher Julia Revell, who flew from Chicago to the rally, told The Post that this is their first time actively supporting a presidential candidate.
Mike remarked, “We’ve never done this before,” adding that this cycle he and Julia are working on phone banks and mailing postcards for the Harris campaign.
It’s visceral,” he continued, stating that “good versus evil and greed vs selflessness” are the two main issues he faces.
Reproductive rights and “caring about people more than caring about yourself” rank high on Julia’s list of concerns.
She told The Post, “I cannot bear the thought of Donald Trump in office.”
Mike stated he doesn’t know a lot about “Medicare for all,” but he loves “the fact government is negotiating with pharmaceutical companies” in response to a question concerning Harris’ healthcare flip-flop.
During the vice president’s speech, about six anti-Israel demonstrators tried to interrupt her with loud cries, but Harris ignored the commotion in the stands.
The Post saw an event staff member rip a banner from two demonstrators that said, “Fund housing not genocide,” with force.
The woman staff member won the tug-of-war over the banner and collapsed on the ground.
These two disruptors, along with others, were led out of the event by security.
