Florida’s ASCO COUNTY (WFLA) — A mental health therapist claimed that the corporation prioritized profits over the needs of its clients, thus she felt under pressure to retain them at the Pasco County facility where she worked.

, thus she felt under pressure to retain them at the Pasco County facility where she worked.

The counselor disagrees with the company’s statement to 8 On Your Side that they never make choices regarding patients based only on finances.

A woman from Tampa Bay claims she was confined in a mental health facility against her will.

Additionally, according to investigator Brittany Muller, a woman stated she was detained at this same institution for seven days.

Kathryn MacKenzie thought her insurance benefits were the real reason she was being held at North Tampa Behavioral Health Hospital in Wesley Chapel, rather than any medical necessity.

Counselor Jessie Roeder, who was employed at the same facility, is now telling her experience.

Roeder said that she was instructed to keep patients in the hospital and restrict patient discharges.

Roeder seeks to speak up for people who are unable to speak for themselves as a qualified mental health counselor.

She expressed her discomfort with certain patients’ treatment.

She remarked, “I looked out my office window and there was a gentleman who was half-naked and had just been released onto the streets without any clothes.”

“And they said he didn’t want to put on clothes when I saw his butt out my window.”

Doesn’t that imply that he’s probably not well enough to be released, I asked? And the reply was, “He’s not covered by insurance.”

According to Roeder, she was employed by Acadia Healthcare’s Park Royal Hospital in Fort Myers to assist in enhancing patient care.

A year later, she assumed over as chief operational.

“I left because I was asked to keep people on the Baker Act longer than necessary, and the CEO and I were not on the same team,” the woman stated.

Patients may be detained without their will for up to 72 hours under Florida’s Baker Act if it is believed that they pose a risk to themselves or others.

“The issue lies in a legal loophole,” the speaker stated. Thus, I can ask the court to extend its stay so that you can have your day in court, but let’s say that day isn’t for three more days, if after 72 hours, inside that 72 hours, [if] I feel that you’re still at risk.

Is it truly the day you appear in court?

Based on court documents from Pasco County that 8 On5355 requests were submitted by Your Side, North Tampa Behavioral Health to extend a patient’s stay into 2024.

Just 56 of those, or just over 1%, obtained the approval of judges.

This implies that 99% of the Baker Acts were most likely invalid and required to be repealed, the speaker stated.

Acadia Healthcare is the proprietor of North Tampa Behavioral Health Hospital.

Currently valued at $7 billion, the Tennessee-based corporation runs 54 psychiatric institutions across the country.

We started asking the same questions after a recent New York Times report questioned the justifications for holding some patients.

The claims that have piqued your curiosity in recent reporting are untrue.

Clinical care decisions are never business judgments, even when determining the length of time a patient may need therapy.

Based on medical need and related legal criteria, licensed physicians and care providers in recognized, controlled healthcare facilities make these medical judgments.

Furthermore, the way the few historical cases that are mentioned are described is notreflect all the information that multidisciplinary teams led by psychiatrists consider while making complex medical decisions.

To be clear, our treatment programs are administered in accordance with medical need, which is based on data gathered from more than 50 years of mental health research.

In order to improve outcomes for the patients and communities we serve, we have made major enhancements to our already meaningful investments in quality, clinical programming, technology, training, and personnel over the past several years, demonstrating our dedication to providing the best level of care.

In order to deliver the best possible care, Acadia Healthcare extended its leadership team to include additional positions and specialties.

These positions include Chief Quality Officer of Inpatient Services, Chief Compliance Officer, Chief Information Officer, and, most recently, Chief Medical Officer.

These have coincided with investments in clinical treatment programs, providers, technology, and new leadership at North.

There has never been a bigger need for mental health and drug abuse assistance in the US.

We are proud of the care that the staff at North Tampa Behavioral Health has given to these acute patients and their families, and we take seriously our obligations in doing so.

Roeder believes there might be a different reason why patient stays are prolonged.

“It’s a means of profiting from the sick; the longer you keep them in the hospital, the more money you make,” Roeder explained. It is therefore not in your best interest to improve them.

According to Roeder, she only worked at the Wesley Chapel location for three months before leaving the organization in 2019.

She claimed that following, she hit her breaking point.

After seeking counseling and treatment at the hospital, a veteran with PTSD ended up being detained there.

Roeder stated, “He was Baker Acted for five days.”

It prevents them from ever returning for medical care.

Once they were institutionalized for the one time they attempted to get help and spoke up, none of those individuals will return and believe that mental health is genuinely for them.

Acadia has informed us that patient privacy regulations prevent them from commenting on specific cases.
