VPD: The driver in Vancouver didn’t have insurance since a friend said it wasn’t necessary.

On Wednesday, January 10, a driver in Vancouver was stopped after the department’s Automatic License Plate Recognition system detected a problem.
August 2020 was the actual expiration date of the vehicle’s insurance, not August of last year.
The driver of the black BMW SUV had been operating a vehicle without insurance for the previous three and a half years.
As per the traffic section on Twitter for the VPD, the driver claimed that they hadn’t renewed their insurance because “their friend mentioned it was not needed.”

Decals, the color-coded month and year stickers that drivers attach to their license plates to show the expiration date of their vehicle’s registration, were going to be phased out, according to a 2022 announcement from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).
On the other hand, any vehicle using British Columbia’s public roads must have insurance.
More specifically, all drivers in British Columbia must have ICBC Basic Autoplan insurance.
ICBC and other private insurers offer optional extra coverage that drivers can choose to buy.
Const. Tania Visiting, a spokesperson for the VPD, states that the department occasionally encounters individuals who are not carrying insurance; this specific driver was cited for the infraction.
