“People are telling me that they’re struggling,” an official responds to a request for a 42% increase in NC home insurance rates.
Official vds :NC Home Insurance Rates 42% Increase
WNCN — RALEIGH, N.C. With an average statewide increase of more than 40%, insurance companies are requesting that the state of North Carolina authorize a significant increase in homeowners’ insurance rates.
Although some homeowners are in disbelief at that amount, it’s far from finalized.
Raleigh resident Robert Vail isn’t shocked to learn that insurance companies are requesting higher rates for homeowners’ insurance, but he disagrees with the size of the proposed increase.
You’ve grown accustomed to it with everything else, so a small increase is acceptable, he said. “Not forty percent!”

The state-wide average increase in homeowners insurance requested by the North Carolina Rate Bureau, which compiles data from insurance companies and recommends insurance rates, is 42%.
Officials say insurance companies want to raise rates by 42% for homes in North Carolina and by 99% at beaches.
“Many people are calling me and asking, ‘How is this going to affect me?'” she said.
Although she acknowledged that she was taken aback by the magnitude of the increase the Rate Bureau is recommending, she added that many insurance companies are attempting to offset their losses.

O’Donnell stated that while no one wants to see higher rates, certain states are having worse problems.
“As one of the few states with a Rate Bureau, we ensure that rate increases are controlled and that insurance companies continue to offer coverage in North Carolina,” the representative stated. That isn’t available in other states.
The insurance companies are free to depart and set their own rates.
Companies want a 99% increase in home insurance at North Carolina beaches; officials state that inland eastern North Carolina areas only receive a 57% increase.
It is not a guarantee that rates will increase to that extent simply because the Rate Bureau requested more than 40%. The request must be approved or denied by the insurance commissioner of North Carolina.
Mike Causey, the commissioner of insurance for North Carolina, stated, “I can’t say in advance which way I’ll go on the filing.” “However, in the past, I have turned down every application that has been presented to me, whether it be a homeowners’ or auto insurance claim, because I felt the numbers were not supported.”

Causey brought up the fact that the North Carolina Rate Bureau requested a nearly 25 percent increase in 2020 and received less than 8 percent of that amount.
Inland eastern North Carolina areas see a 57% increase in home insurance, while firms at North Carolina beaches seek a 99% increase.
“Not a single person has suggested raising my rates,” he claimed. “These folks are telling me they’re having difficulties.”
