Medicare and Insurance Should Cover Obesity Drugs, Says Older Adults
Shilpa Medicare Share Price: 83% Believe Now
A survey of US adults between the ages of 50 and 80 revealed that weight-loss medications ought to be paid for by Medicare and other health insurance.
Out of the over 2600 people surveyed, 83% believe that prescription medications for weight loss that have received FDA approval should be covered by health insurance, and 76% believe Medicare should also cover these medications.
Only thirty percent, though, would be prepared to pay higher Medicare premiums in order to receive coverage for these drugs.
63% of respondents who report being overweight and 45% of respondents who have diabetes, regardless of weight, say they would be interested in taking such medications.
On December 13, 2023. the University of Michigan (U-M) National Poll on Healthy Aging was made available online.
Elevated Perception
The university stated that the results coincide with a surge in public interest in injectable glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), including Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, and Mounjaro.
In total, 64% of those surveyed were aware of at least one prescription drug used to control weight.
Inconsistent Reporting
For those who pay out of pocket, the GLP-1 RAs can cost more than $12,000 annually, according to the university.
Medicare no longer covers weight-loss medications, although it still does so for drugs that help people with type 2 diabetes control their weight. This is due to a 2003 change to the Medicare Part D program.
In certain states, Medicaid pays for anti-obesity medications.
The majority of private insurance plans and the VA provide coverage for them, but with limitations because the newer drugs come with hefty monthly bills.
Recently, the American Medical Association urged insurance companies to pay for evidence-based weight-loss drugs.
The university stated that there are significant shortages due to the high demand for these drugs, particularly from people who are willing to pay full price and use them off-label.
“It’s critical for patients with obesity or diabetes, or who are overweight with other health problems, to talk with their healthcare providers about their options as these medications grow in awareness and use, and insurers make decisions about coverage,” stated poll director
