Teachers Day Quotes: Mantorville Fight For Increased Pay 75%
KTTC, ROCHESTER, MN – Following mediation between Kasson-Mantorville Public Schools and Kasson-Mantorville Education Minnesota Local 7124, Kasson-Mantorville teachers staged a protest on Monday in support of increased pay and health insurance.
The two parties, who started the day roughly $440,000 apart over a two-year contract, made progress, according to a statement released by the union on Monday.
At KM, the union is in charge of 149 out of 150 teachers.
Bernie Buehler, an English teacher at KM, said, “In the last few years, it has felt more paycheck to paycheck for me than what I have ever felt before.”

Buehler has over 28 years of experience. He claims that because of the current economic pressures, negotiations have been more challenging this time around.
“Inflation, everything we have gone through, the rise in health insurance costs—we are lagging behind where teachers ought to be.”
As they deal with growing health insurance costs, inflation, and a pay schedule that falls short of comparable districts for experienced teachers with more than 15 years of experience, the union stated in a statement that it “does not believe the current board offer is one that meaningfully addresses the challenges of KMEM teachers.”
The statement clarified that KM teachers would have to pay an extra $3,360 a year for family health insurance if they accepted the board’s most recent offer.
Teachers in KM will have to pay an additional $430 a month for health insurance as of January 1.
The district and union have since July, and the union has made it clear that it wants to see teachers compensated fairly for their skills.
Aaron Wilke, president of the KMEM union, stated, “We want a tentative agreement and our kids deserve it. We are not satisfied with the progress of negotiations so far.”
During the mediation, Wilke clarified that the union had made up 25% of the difference in the negotiations, but there was still 75% to go. In addition, he claims that the teachers worked very hard during contract negotiations.

Wilke states that the union intends to return to the bargaining table as soon as possible and that striking is not an option. Wilke declared, “We want to remain in school, we want our students to be in school with the familiar faces and routines.”
The district and union are still out of pocket $340,000. The KM district has been contacted by KTTC, but they have not heard back as of yet.
