Gadar 2 Producer: Launches An Insurance Poor Maple Syrup Year
After a poor maple syrup year, New Brunswick launches an insurance program for producers.
Maple syrup producers in New Brunswick had a delightful Saturday, and it wasn’t just because they were gathering for the annual general meeting of the industry.
On this day, a proposed insurance program that will start in 2025 and give producers access to some of the same advantages enjoyed by other agricultural sectors was also unveiled.
The New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association’s vice-president, Éric Caron, stated that the industry has long advocated for this insurance.
“We have very satisfied members,” he stated on Saturday.
Additionally, although Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada offers a program that provides advance payments to farmers in order to support them during the off-season, during a poor year, producers may find it difficult to pay back the program.
According to Caron, the insurance will enable producers to pay for expenses in years such as the most recent one.

Currently, apples, grains, sweet corn, potatoes, oilseeds, fresh market vegetables, and wild blueberries are covered by agricultural insurance in New Brunswick.
After Quebec, which also saw a significant decrease of 41.3% in maple syrup production last year, New Brunswick is Canada’s second-largest producer of the syrup.
For producers of maple syrup, however, Quebec already had a crop insurance program in place.
On Saturday, Agriculture Minister Margaret Johnson was unable to explain why New Brunswick maple syrup producers hadn’t gotten crop insurance sooner, given that several other provinces had already received it.
She remarked, “It was before my time.” “All I know is that since I’ve started working on this, we’ve realized the industry needs it, and we want to help it.”

According to him, when “they experience a significant production shortfall due to an insured peril,” producers will receive financial support through the program.

Producers who have at least 1,000 taps and ten years of production experience are eligible to participate in the program.

Johnson stated that getting the program off the ground and getting people to buy into it is her top priority right now when asked about growing the program to include more producers.
He stated that insurance would be somewhat beneficial in difficult years, but he believes that larger producers would benefit even more from it.
Anticipating the upcoming season, Although Briggs stated that it is premature to predict the outcome, he is optimistic.
“Every year is different and I don’t predict good or bad until it’s over,” he stated. “As long as it doesn’t get too hot too fast, we could have a good season yet.”
