New insurance program for maple syrup producers in New Brunswick follows a sticky year.

New Brunswick maple syrup producers will soon have more insurance available to them thanks to a partnership between the province and the federal government. Maple syrup is a sticky-sweet Canadian staple.

The good news for producers who faced a difficult 2023 was revealed over the weekend at this year’s maple syrup forum.

Agriculture Minister Margaret Johnson stated on Saturday, “We’re very pleased this morning to deliver that program to help producers, as the industry has been asking for it.” “Everyone seems really excited about it,” I believe.

Insects, natural disasters, and inclement weather are examples of unforeseen damages that the insurance will pay for.

Every year, maple products bring in millions of dollars for Canada.

year, but the syrup season of 2023 proved to be difficult. A thirty-five percent decrease in maple products in New Brunswick was caused by unfavorable weather, which put many producers in a difficult position.

Little Mactaquac Maples’ owner, Paul Reynolds, operates with roughly 1,000 taps, which is the bare minimum required to be eligible for the insurance program.

He’s relieved it’s not exclusive to big producers.

“It serves as an excellent safety net for us during years when our production is exceptionally low,” he remarked.

Ninety percent of producers who participated in a poll were in favor of the insurance, and eighty percent said they would be interested in buying it, according to the province.

Similar initiatives already exist in Nova Scotia and Quebec, which influenced the New Brunswick model

The vice-president of the New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association, Éric Caron, stated, “Our members are very happy to get this insurance in operation for 2025.”

New Brunswick’s maple syrup industry is expanding. According to a Université de Moncton study, the province’s tap count has increased by almost 90% since 2010, and the amount of syrup produced has increased by more than 160%.

Johnson believes that the growth will not stop.

She stated, “We’re collaborating with the association to develop a strategic plan going forward.” Since this one is slated to run for the next five years, we’d like to know what the industry’s long-term goals are.
