Letters: Richmond motorcycle accident highlights need for changes to the insurance system
Cursive Letters: 1Motorcycle Accident Highlights Insurance Now
I’m a Japanese reader of Richmond News.
Reading your article from January 10th, “Japanese auto repair shop owner Yanagitani, who was seriously injured in a car accident and is undergoing rehabilitation after a lengthy hospital stay, is on the verge of closing his business without adequate compensation,” made me very concerned about the insurance situation in Richmond.
If you operate a motor vehicle and cause an accident, the other party may sue you for high costs. Having auto insurance is a must if you want to be adequately compensated in case something like this happens.
An accident has a cause every time, and that cause is always apparent. It is typical for the police to gather proof in order to identify the offender.
This article’s first query is whether it is clear who was at fault for the accident and whether compensation is being discussed in an ambiguous manner. Has the police conducted a thorough enough investigation to determine the cause?

The insurance system is the second query. Even though the kind and extent of damage differ greatly from one accident to the next, isn’t compensation decided without carefully analyzing each one?
I am aware that the goal of this insurance system’s revision was to place as little of the burden as possible on the offender.
Additionally, victims cannot file a lawsuit against the offender unless they are found guilty of a particular crime, like driving
drunk, which is, in my opinion, a contradiction in terms because, although the insurance system was designed to compensate the victim fairly, it has instead benefited the offender and caused the victim’s suffering.

The insurance system is the crux of the issue, and the only way to resolve it is for all drivers in British Columbia to vehemently acknowledge that the regrettable event that Mr.
Yanagitani experienced is not just someone else’s problem, but rather a significant issue that could happen to them as well, and to insist that the government of British Columbia make improvements to the system.
