Before you get behind the wheel, make sure your car is insured, according to the Coquitlam RCMP.

This occurs after law enforcement officials report a sharp rise in the number of vehicles being driven without proper insurance. They claim to have issued 24 violation tickets since the start of January, a significant increase from the 11 tickets they issued for the entire month of January in 2023.

According to police, the number of people driving without insurance has been rising over the past year. They attribute this trend to the removal of license plate decals from cars as of May 2022.

Staff Sgt. Mark McCutcheon, Traffic Services Commander with the Coquitlam RCMP, stated, “When our officers stop vehicles for no insurance, drivers often say that they forgot or didn’t realize because they don’t have the decal reminder on their vehicle anymore.”

“We firmly advise drivers to confirm that their cars are adequately insured before departing.”

Drivers who are detected driving without insurance may receive a $598 fine and have their car towed.
