Former head of the insurance department arrested over bribery claims

A former department head of an unnamed insurance company has been placed under arrest by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on charges of bribery.
The arrest, made in Kuala Lumpur, involves claims of soliciting and accepting bribes totaling approximately RM500,000.
The person, a woman in her 30s, was arrested after making a statement to the MACC, according to an FMT report. The allegation is that she recommended awarding contracts to three different companies in exchange for bribes.
These businesses assisted the insurance company she worked for by offering training and consulting services.

On Wednesday, the suspect was brought before the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates’ Court. Ativan Mohamed, the magistrate, issued a seven-day remand, which is in place until January 16 in order to allow for additional inquiry into the situation.
The arrest was confirmed by Kuala Lumpur’s MACC director, Fauzi Husin. According to him, the MACC Act of 2009’s Section 16(a)(B) is being used to prosecute cases involving the solicitation and acceptance of bribes by people in positions of power or influence.
The Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) stated that the recent increase in extremely heavy rain in several Malaysian states has highlighted the necessity for Malaysians to act quickly to safeguard their assets and possessions.
