According to Manitoba Public Insurance’s yearly list of the biggest insurance frauds of the year, there were many inventive ways for Manitobans to try and commit insurance fraud in 2023.
Each year, the Special Investigations Unit looks into dubious claims and creates the list. Over 3,000 investigations were closed by the department, saving MPI customers over $10.5 million in claims.
According to a press release from MPI’s Chief Customer Officer Satvir Jatana, “our experts in SIU investigate suspicious claims to give customers the peace of mind that the right claims are being paid for the right amount.”
“Some of the most inventive ways that people try to commit fraud are displayed in this annual list, and the methods that MPI’s specialists employ to thwart them, saving our ratepayers millions of dollars.
The most prominent fraud involved a consumer filing a collision claim for their car and saying they were unaware that repairs were necessary until they went to retrieve personal items from an impound lot.

Additionally, the driver denied using alcohol, drugs, or prescription drugs 12 hours prior to the incident, but MPI claimed that the evidence presented a different picture.
The driver of the car was observed operating it erratically, damaging property, running over a parked car, and nearly running over a pedestrian. Police found open alcohol and drug containers inside the car, and the driver was observed staggering around following the impact.
The driver insisted that they were unaware of the incident, but his request was turned down. According to MPI, ratepayers saved $60,000.
The second on the list was a luxury vehicle involved in a single-vehicle collision. The driver reported that they lost control of their vehicle when they struck a bump in the road at 60 km/h.
After reviewing the car’s data, which revealed it was being driven at three times the stated speed, SIU concluded that the damage was too severe for the stated speed.
According to MPI, that driver saved $42,000 because their license was suspended and their claim was rejected.
A driver in third place reported having headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, and arm pain as a result of injuries they sustained in an accident.
