WSFA – Montgomery, Alabama A City Council ordinance that would have ended the city’s new supplemental health insurance programme for retirees who qualify for Medicare was vetoed by Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed on Friday.

For retirees 65 years of age and above in the city of Montgomery, Medicare has served as their primary health insurance source; Blue Cross Blue Shield has been used to offset costs.

Following several months of review, the city and Am wins signed a one-year contract in September to give retirees additional insurance to supplement what Blue Cross Blue Shield does not cover.

According to the city’s projections, Montgomery will save $1,921,456.13 under the Am wins contract as opposed to the 2022–2023 supplemental insurance rates.

Furthermore, they estimate that retiree premium savings will total roughly $655,613. These discounts

originate from the reduced out-of-pocket costs, copay’s, and premiums stipulated in the AM WINS contract.

Furthermore, by sticking with the current agreement, the city avoids having to pay the providers $6 million for cancelling the previously agreed-upon and signed contract.

“Many retirees have expressed gratitude to my office for the plan, highlighting the hundreds of dollars they will be able to save each month on their medications and therapies,” Reed said.

Notwithstanding this assertion, on December 5, a divided City Council decided to sever the city’s agreement with Am wins.

Retirees would probably be without additional coverage for the first few months of 2024 as a result of this action.

Because of rumours that they might lose their jobs, retirees have expressed fear about the change.

Medicare will continue to be their primary provider, so they can still see their doctor, according to representatives from the mayor’s administration, even if they have to pay more out of pocket.

The Amwins contract is no longer in doubt thanks to Reed’s veto, and it will go into effect in January 2024 unless the city council decides to override it.

Cornelius “CC” Calhoun, president of the Montgomery City Council, stated that he was in favour of keeping the mayor’s veto and hoped that other council members would feel the same way.

Calhoun stated, “The council has oversight, but when we try to run the administrative and day-to-day operation of city government, we’re overstepping our bounds.”

During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, there will be discussions about whether to uphold or override the veto.
