Everybody Wants To Rule The World:A resident of the coast wants

A resident of the coast wants ICBC to bring back insurance decals.

Adam Chunky, a resident of the Sunshine Coast, has “religiously” paid for his auto insurance for the 35 years he has driven on British Columbia roads. That is, until he recently forgot to renew his policy.

Chunky informed Coast Reporter that while he did receive a notice to renew his truck’s insurance, he did not receive a similar notice for his car.

Everybody Wants To Rule The World:

Chunky was shocked to learn that his insurance was inactive when he was pulled over by the police in late November.

He claimed that in the past, he has relied on the ICBC licence plate decal to remind him when to renew his policy.

However in 2022, ICBC ceased to use decals, and Chunky received a $600 ticket for operating a vehicle without insurance.

“I don’t mind that I was stopped by the police and told that my licence plates were expired because I would have paid much more for a ticket if I had been in an accident or something,” Chunky stated.

He thinks the fine is excessive for those who just forgot to renew, especially seniors who are reliant on old habits, even though it should apply to those who purposefully drive without insurance.

“I believe that because of the change, ICBC bears some of the blame, and the $600 in fines is not appropriate.”

When he visited a broker to renew his insurance, a worker claimed that there were other people who had forgotten to insure their cars that day.

Chunky claimed that’s when he realised that other people might have also depended on the sticker system.

“Believe me, at 66 years old, I can’t even recall what I had for breakfast.”
According to Chunky, the fine is excessively high for individuals who made a careless error.

“We estimate less than 1% of drivers on B.C. roads are uninsured, and that has not changed since decals were eliminated in May 2022,” ICBC staff said in response to a question about whether the agency has seen a change in insurance rates and tickets since the removal of insurance decals.

According to ICBC’s most recent ticket statistics, which are for 2022, ticket prices did not significantly change.

In the province, 851 tickets for driving without insurance were issued in January, and 695 tickets in February.

Only 20 additional tickets were issued in June, the month after decals were removed, with ticket prices ranging from the mid to high 700 s between March and June.

In July 2022, 863 tickets were issued for driving without insurance. This was followed by 954 in August, 926 in September, 983 in October, 906 in November, and 939 in December of the same year, for a total of 10,132 tickets in British Columbia in 2022.

Police departments throughout the province now use Automated Licence Plate Recognition instead of the decals, so they no longer rely on them.

note infractions like driving without a valid insurance policy. Prior to doing away with decals, ICBC claimed to have coordinated with law enforcement, the RCMP, and the province government to guarantee a seamless transition.

ICBC spent $1 million at the time to upgrade and modernise the automated system, which included buying new hardware.

After B.C. made the change, ICBC lists five other regions of the nation—Albania, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, and the Northwest Territories—that did not require drivers to display decals.

Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, and the Yukon have all embraced the change since British Columbia did.

In a statement to Coast Reporter, ICBC stated that many insurance brokers follow suit.

Regarding Chunky, he is currently putting together a request to have the penalty lowered.

He wants ICBC to come up with another plan for people who might forget to renew their insurance, or he wants the decals put back in place.
