If the battery pack on a Hyundai electric vehicle (EV) ever needs to be changed, the owners may be in for a shock. A 2017 Ioniq owner faced a similar situation when he was informed that replacing his EV’s battery would cost more than $50,000.
Similarly, an almost new 2022 Ioniq 5 in Vancouver had its insurance scrapped because the cost of replacing the battery exceeded the cost of the car itself.
The first incident concerned Kyle Sue’s 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, which she discovered had damage to the battery protection cover after trying to avoid an object on the road. Notwithstanding the
Dealership claimed that the battery warranty was void due to damage on the plate, specifically some scratches and a tiny gap between the cover and the battery, without ever having inspected the actual battery.

Hyundai demanded an immediate replacement, which came with a price tag of over $60,000—more than the new Ioniq 5 would have cost. Sue turned to his insurance because she couldn’t afford the outrageous expense, but she was informed that his almost-new EV would be written off because of the high price.
But this was not an isolated instance. Simrat Sooch’s story was featured in a different Ontario report last month. Simrat’s 2017 Ioniq battery failed at 172,345 kilometers, which was slightly over the 160,000 km warranty. $50,000 was quoted by the Hyundai dealer for a
new battery, installation, and taxes, making the repair unfeasible and costing Sooch more than the car’s actual value.
In that instance, to ascertain whether the battery required to be changed, “comprehensive diagnostic tests were not completed on the vehicle,” Hyundai Canada admitted to Global News.

Hyundai Canada responded by stating that, “as part of our commitment to our customers, we will resolve this situation by paying fair market value for his vehicle either in cash or towards a new Hyundai.”
Sue, on the other hand, did not have that experience; Hyundai scrapped his 2022 Ioniq 5 without paying him anything. To make matters worse, he noticed that all of the insurance discounts he had managed to accrue vanished when the car was written off. causing his insurance premiums to double over the following ten years.
