Toronto, Ontario In an effort to foster public confidence between drivers and insurers, the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) is releasing its first Auto Insurance Supervision Plan.

The three main areas of supervision for auto insurers under this 15-month plan will go into effect in January 2024.

These crucial areas include underwriting factors to prevent potential discriminatory practices that could affect higher-risk customers; sale and distribution factors to guarantee drivers receive the best quote and information is given to consumers in a clear and timely manner; and policy

Servicing factors to guarantee claims are handled fairly, promptly, and transparently in addition to reviewing the number and complaints that insurers have received.

Huston Loke, executive vice president of market conduct at FSRA, stated that “executing this plan is crucial in ensuring the fair treatment of consumers, the continued success of Ontario’s auto insurance industry, and FSRA’s commitment to regulatory excellence.”

“The results of our proactive supervision work will be disseminated to encourage industry adherence to legal mandates and utilised as a basis for future auto insurance supervision initiatives.”

Under the recently proposed plan, the FSRA will choose insurers for examination based on risk.

The 2023–2025 Auto Supervision Plan expands on the gains achieved by the FSRA through its multi-year Take-All-Comers Thematic Review by guaranteeing that every customer has equitable and prompt access to auto insurance.

Insurers are expected by the FSRA to examine the plan and additional pertinent publications to make sure they abide by the law and other regulatory requirements.
