Farmers Insurance Open champion Matthieu Pavon gets ideas from his hand tattoos

While he’s not the only PGA Tour golfer with a tattoo, Matthieu Pavon may be among the select few whose tattoo serves as a constant reminder for him when he approaches the ball.

The words, “The saliva that flows now will become the tears of joy tomorrow,” are inscribed on the right hand of 31-year-old rookie Pavon, who won the Farmers Insurance Open for his first victory on the Tour.

Being the first Frenchman to win on the PGA Tour, Pavon is a native of that nation. Interestingly, he has an English-language tattoo on his hand.

His inspiration comes from more than just the tattoo. He claims that after jotting down ideas, he frequently refers back to those notes.

It all comes down to motivations. Having everything crystal clear in my mind is really important to me,” he stated. Ever since I emerged victorious in Spain last year, I have been jotting down some notes in my book that help me to stay in the present.

Phrases that seem to be explaining to me why I play golf and why I’m here give me a little more self-assurance.

As of now in 2024, that confidence has been flowing. Before breaking through at Torrey Pines, the longest course on the tour, two weeks ago, Pavon tied for seventh at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He then tied for 39th at the American Express.

The most challenging non-major venue from the previous season was the PGA Tour.

The early-week rain and fog made Pavan’s first-time experience with the golf course even more difficult.

“There was fog when I arrived. He said, “I mean, I was like, ‘OK, nice, welcome to California,’ because I couldn’t see a hundred yards away from me.”

“Oh, there’s a fairway, there’s a rough, and there’s a cliff,” is how it seems when we arrive on Friday [for the third round]. Thus, everything seemed somewhat unfamiliar to me. The golf course was completely new to me as of Friday.

Then he found out how to succeed on the PGA Tour.
