The final provision of Michigan’s Reproductive Health Act, which eliminated the need for a separate insurance rider for abortion coverage, was signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whither on Monday.
The action was taken in anticipation of 2024, when Democrats will continue to push for the issue, and after voters in the battleground state voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution during the previous year’s midterm elections.

Since Roe v. Wade was overturned last year, the right to an abortion has become a major motivator for voters.
Democratic contenders have emphasised the issue heavily in their pitches, notably Whiter in her 2022 reelection campaign.
In response, voters have continuously selected to uphold the right to an abortion and candidates who back those liberties.
After signing the legislation, Whither wrote on X, “Today, ten years after I gave a speech on the Senate floor and shared my own story as a survivor of sexual assault, I am honoured to repeal the ban on insurance coverage for abortion.”

She stated in the post, “Never give up fighting for what you believe to be right. That is the moral of the story.”
Only 2.5 percent of the more than 27,000 abortions performed in Michigan last year, according to the state, were covered by insurance. The great majority paid for themselves.
The contentious insurance rider requirement was authorised in 2013 by the legislature, which was then controlled by Republicans.
Whither, who was the minority leader of the state Senate at the time, spoke out against it and shared her personal narrative.

According to Live .com, she stated, “The Republican male majority continues to ignorantly and unnecessarily weigh in on important women’s health issues that they know nothing about.”
Whiter has long been an outspoken advocate for the right to an abortion. Six months following her reelection and the Democrats’ takeover of the state legislature, the governor of Michigan signed legislation ending the state’s 1931 abortion ban, which she had fought even before Roe was overturned.
Whiter claimed in August that there were still a lot of “bad laws” that “put politically motivated, medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion.”

According to a recent CNN survey, 50% of Michigan’s registered voters supported former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical rematch, while President
Biden Joe had forty percent. Four years after the state had voted for Trump, Biden had turned it blue in 2020.

Like other Democrats, Biden intends to run for reelection in 2024 by emphasising abortion rights. As he considers running for reelection, the president will continue to concentrate on “efforts that are helping motivate and mobilise voters right now,” such as access to abortion, his campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez told CNN earlier this year.
